Welcome to The Moor Sheffield
The Moor is one of Sheffield's busiest and longest serving retail areas.
Few shopping thoroughfares in the country have so much history attached to
them.
Atkinsons, Sheffield's oldest and most illustrious independent department
store, has seen more than most - including the flattening of its majestic
Victorian outlet in December 1940 at the hands of Hitler's Luftwaffe.
The devastating attack destroyed much of the area which was rebuilt in the
1960s.
The 1970s was definitely a halcyon period for The Moor as it boasted
flagship retail institutions like Redgates, Pauldens, Robert Brothers and
others.
But even today, as the area undergoes multi-million pound regeneration and
counts down to becoming the new home of the Sheffield Markets building, it
is still one of Sheffield's most popular retail destinations.
The Moor, as its name suggests, started life as a expanse of marshy land
connecting the then Sheffield and 'Little Sheffield' but was renamed South
Street (it was originally known as Sheffield Moor) in the early nineteenth
century.
By the start of the 20th century it was one of the city's most popular
retail thoroughfares.
It was named The Moor in 1922 to avoid confusion with South Street in the
Hyde Park area of the city.
The area stretches from "Moorhead" in the north (south of the Peace Gardens)
to "Moorfoot" in the south, where the former Manpower Services Commission
building stands
The Moor is presently home to household names like Argos, Atkinsons, BHS,
Debenhams and Sainsburys; it has a year round programme of events and has
been the focus of national attention with its staging of the National
History Museum's breathtaking Wild Planet exhibition.
